Before we take the necessary steps towards stress relief, let’s first look at how stress actually works in the body. Stress is often defined as the fight or flight response that the body undergoes when under stress.
Think about an episode of war — a tense and nervous situation. The body responds by increasing the heartbeat and breathing, as well as muscle contractions to keep from running and fighting. The brain also sends signals to increase the blood pressure and the blood flow to the muscles. In this scenario, stress is the body’s natural response to any danger, so it is often referred to as the body’s fight or flight reaction.
It can be very difficult to deal with a stressful situation when the body has been constantly bombarded by anxiety and fear all day. One way to help relieve stress is to establish a calming environment where you can do something that will get your mind off the situation. This can be done in a number of ways:
Have a hobby or activity that you enjoy and one that will help you relax such as reading, writing, playing an instrument, listening to music, watching visual things, etc. As long as the activity is fun, relaxing, and relaxing things, it will relax the mind and give you some restorative work to do after your relaxation session.
Having positive thoughts and remembering good things about your life can be very useful. Making lists and creating daily goals for yourself is a great way to start to set a plan for the future. They will make you feel more positive and will give you a sense of achievement. This will encourage you to stay on track and to avoid, “Fight or flight” response that causes stress.
Another idea is to stop and smell the roses — put yourself in a peaceful setting for an hour or so and just sit and smell flowers. Or take a bubble bath — soak yourself in a nice relaxing bubble bath filled with warm water.
One of the best ways to relieve stress relief is to just simply try to imagine that it is not there. Just think about the day that you have ahead, enjoying what is in front of you and worrying about nothing.
Music is another stress relief method. I like to play classical or jazz music while I’m doing other things and it relaxes me and helps me get my mind off of the situation. You can always change the tune to the tune of your choice — it will relax you.
Watching a movie is another stress relief that relaxes me and gets my mind off of the current situation. Sometimes movies that are rated higher on the box office can bring your stress levels down. I have learned that if I am in a movie theater, I don’t have to worry about anything else but the movie — I can just relax and enjoy myself.
Try to incorporate these stress relief strategies into your daily routine and make them a part of your daily ritual. You will find that they can help you relieve stress and even bring you relief when you really need it.
Don’t allow stress to control your everyday life. Find simple ways to stress-free yourself – the worst thing you can do is wait for the situation to get worse. Always be on the lookout for ways to relax — you never know when you may need to ease your mind.
